Most career-defining moments don’t come with flashing signs or dramatic buildup. Sometimes, they start quietly with a flier handed out in class, a casual suggestion from an instructor, or a family member who just really needs a haircut.
For Tucson-area cosmetology student Monica Reyes, her life-changing moment was this:
her teacher mentioned that Sport Clips Haircuts was hosting a student contest called the Battle of the Hair and encouraged the class to enter. Monica snapped a picture of the flier, shrugged, and thought, “Well my brother-in-law has a huge afro. Why not?” She had no idea she had just made one of the most pivotal decisions toward her future career.
Like many cosmetology students, Monica never initially saw herself as someone who would win a national competition. She wasn’t seeking awards, she simply wanted more practice, more experience, and a reason to try something bold on a willing model.
She convinced her brother-in-law Mario, with help from her mother-in-law, to let her give him a dramatic transformation from the afro style he’d been sporting. He agreed, she submitted the photos of the style she gave him, and she moved on with school.
“I honestly kind of forgot about it,” Monica admitted. Winning wasn’t even on her radar. But weeks later, while she was rinsing out a client’s color at school, the surprise arrived: balloons, flowers, and two Sport Clips team members announcing she had won the contest. Her classmates erupted in applause. Monica was stunned. That moment didn’t just celebrate her skills; it redirected the course of her professional life.
Winning the Battle of the Hair meant traveling by air, solo, for the first time in her life from Tucson to Sport Clips’ National Huddle event in San Antonio. She had never been on a plane and was terrified, but she chose courage over comfort. “I want to say ‘yes’ to things, even when I’m scared,” she said.
Sport Clips handled every detail of her trip, and once she arrived, her life changed. She met finalists from across the country, attended top-tier education and hair shows, explored the Riverwalk, and, for the first time, truly saw what Sport Clips was all about:
Before the Battle of the Hair, Sport Clips was simply a name she recognized. After Huddle, it became a place she knew she wanted to belong.
Monica traveled to Huddle with her cosmetology educator, Renee Toomey, who she said was so helpful throughout her education (and still is today). After the Huddle, she applied with her local Sport Clips franchise owner, and everything clicked into place. She had a job waiting for her when she graduated from cosmetology school.
For Monica, that warmth, authenticity, and enthusiasm solidified her decision. She found more than a job; it would be her future professional home.
When she began working at Sport Clips, she instantly felt supported. Stylists with more experience mentored her. Training resources helped her build clipper confidence. Regular clients quickly filled her chair. She found a team that wanted her to succeed just as much as she did.
“Everyone is super helpful. I love that education is number one. I love being able to track my progress. They really want me to grow.”
The contest entry turned into a plane ticket. A plane ticket turned into inspiration. Inspiration turned into a career.
Today, Monica is thriving behind the chair. She has a specialty in high-and-tights, a roster of loyal regulars, and a passion for connecting with clients. She still does color for family, rocks her own bright pink-and-red hair, and continues giving back to her Tucson community through volunteer haircutting events.
But she might never have found this path if she hadn’t taken that first, small, simple step.
If you’re in cosmetology or barber school and wondering if competitions are worth it, consider Monica’s journey. Battle of the Hair entries are now open through February 10, 2026. Your “yes” to an entry could just be the start of your professional career. To find out more and to enter, visit our Student Resources page.

Founder and Chairman Gordon Logan shares his exciting views on what the No Tax on Tips Act can mean for Team Members.
In a stunning bipartisan move, Congress passed—and President Trump signed—the One Big Beautiful Bill Act on July 4, 2025. Central to this massive legislative package is the No Tax on Tips Act, introduced by Senator Ted Cruz (R‑TX) and unanimously approved in the Senate on May 20, 2025 (politifact).
Starting with the 2025 tax year, eligible service workers can deduct up to $25,000 of reported cash tips from their federal taxable income—no questions asked (Kiplinger). The benefit phases out for individuals earning over $150,000 and joint filers over $300,000, and is available whether you standard‑ or itemize (Kiplinger). Qualifying occupations include servers, bartenders, delivery drivers, hair stylists, and others in traditionally tipped roles as of December 31, 2023 (Kiplinger).
This deduction applies retroactively to income earned in 2025, but only through December 31, 2028, unless Congress extends it (ogletree).
Employers must report tip income and occupations on W‑2s, with the Treasury Department issuing clear IRS guidelines soon on acceptable reporting practices (Littler Mendelson P.C.).
Supporters—including the National Restaurant Association—view the measure as a victory for working families, estimating average annual gains of around $1,300 for tip‑dependent workers (The White House). However, critics argue the provision is a temporary fix, benefiting those already paying little federal income tax, and could let employers justify low base wages or encourage expanded tipping into untipped jobs.(AP News).
In short, the No Tax on Tips Act delivers meaningful tax relief to tipped workers, but it's a short‑term and imperfect measure. Whether it ushers in fairer wages or unintended wage discrimination hinges on how it's put into action—and whether future Congresses renew it beyond 2028.

The impact was felt far and wide when the recent wildfires swept through California. While some California Sport Clips Haircuts locations were unharmed, the Simi Valley location faced eight days of power outages and multiple team members were forced to evacuate their homes. Through it all, the resilience of first responders stood out, and one California Sport Clips manager found a special way to say thank you.
Camelia Smith, the store manager of the Newbury Park Sport Clips location, has been with the company for five years and in a managerial position for one. While her location was unharmed during the recent fires, she learned firsthand about the tireless efforts of first responders in the area from one of her regular clients, a firefighter himself. He shared how his team worked around the clock battling the flames, working to ensure the safety of residents.
Wanting to share their appreciation, Sport Clips Area Developers Ron and Spencer Chamberlain stepped in to support the community with a meaningful gesture: providing free MVP Haircut Experience coupons. Camelia knew exactly who needed the extra support during this difficult time, and her regular firefighter client, John, was the first to receive a free haircut. Camelia said he was surprised and incredibly grateful when she offered him a stack of coupons to share with his company of firefighters. At one point, John and his crew worked nine days straight fighting the Palisades fire, got a short rest and then worked another four days on another fire. These coupons ensured those working tirelessly to help their communities would have the chance to enjoy a well-deserved MVP treatment.
During the fires, first responders put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of their communities. Containing disasters, protecting homes, and saving lives were just some of the ways firefighters from all over the world demonstrated bravery and selflessness. In times of crisis, even something as simple as a haircut can make a big difference. Sport Clips is proud to support the heroes who keep our communities safe, one haircut at a time.
