From Practicing at Home to Winning a National Haircutting Competition
Less than six months after starting cosmetology school, José Navarro found himself standing on a stage in front of thousands of beauty professionals, hearing his name announced as the winner of Sport Clips Haircuts' 2026 Battle of the Hair competition.
For the 19-year-old from Grand Rapids, Michigan, the moment was surreal. Along with the title, Navarro received a $5,000 scholarship to help continue his education and pursue his dream of becoming an educator in the beauty industry.
But his journey to that stage began years earlier, far from the bright lights of a national competition.
A Passion Discovered Through Persistence
Navarro's story is one of resilience, determination, and finding purpose through adversity.
Born into a family of five siblings, he spent part of his childhood in Mexico before returning to Michigan after the loss of his father when he was just 10 years old.
Years later, at age 16, he discovered barbering through online courses and became hooked immediately. With four brothers willing to sit in his chair, he had a built-in roster of practice models.
He took full advantage of it and began cutting their hair.
What started as curiosity quickly became a passion. After high school, Navarro took a year to figure out what he wanted his future to look like. The answer kept bringing him back to hair care and barbering. In November 2025, he enrolled at Empire Beauty School in Standale, Michigan.
Just a few months later, an opportunity arrived that would change everything.
A National Opportunity
Battle of the Hair is Sport Clips' annual competition for students currently enrolled in cosmetology or barber school. Participants select a model, create a haircut and style, and submit before-and-after photos showcasing their work. Navarro's submission stood out.
After being selected as one of six finalists nationwide, he received a surprise visit at his school from Sport Clips representatives, complete with gifts and the exciting news that he would be heading to Louisville, Kentucky, for Sport Clips' National Huddle.
There, he joined fellow finalists from across the country:

- Lana Hood, Ogle School, Fort Worth, Texas
- Eli Rizzo, PM School, Reno, Nevada
- Oscar Tapia, PM School, Nampa, Idaho
- Abigail Diaz, PM School, Denver, Colorado
Sport Clips covered all expenses for each finalist and an instructor to attend the event, where they participated in education sessions, hands-on training, and networking opportunities with some of the industry's most respected professionals.
For Navarro, the experience was eye-opening.
"I am so thankful , and it's so exciting to be here," he said. "Being here is probably one of the best things I've ever experienced, and really elevating my mind to just a whole new world that I didn't even know existed."

The Moment Everything Changed
As the conference ended, the finalists gathered for the announcement everyone had been waiting for.
When Navarro's name was called as the 2026 Battle of the Hair champion, his reaction said it all.
He jumped up and embraced each of his fellow finalists before making his way to the stage to accept the award. He took a moment to thank the people who had supported him along the way.
"I just want to thank everyone that came to support me," he said. "This has been a really beautiful experience. I appreciate every single one of you.”
Looking Ahead
While winning Battle of the Hair is a major milestone, Navarro sees it as just the beginning.
After graduating from Empire Beauty School, he plans to continue his education with the goal of becoming an educator himself. He hopes to help inspire others who may be searching for their own path, just as he once was.
From practicing haircuts on his brothers to winning a national competition with less than six months of formal training, Navarro's journey is a reminder that passion, perseverance, and hard work can open doors in unexpected ways.
